Ukraine is located in Eastern Europe and, by area, is one of the largest countries on the continent, covering 603,550 km2. It has a population of approximately 41.17 million people, served by a banking network that operates in the national currency, the hryvnia (UAH). The official language used in banking documentation and customer service is Ukrainian, and the international calling code +380 is used for contacting branches and card issuers from abroad.

Cash remains an important part of everyday transactions, and ATMs are the most common point of access for both residents and visitors. Withdrawal limits, fees and accepted card networks vary between operators, so travellers are generally advised to check terms with their card issuer before using machines in Ukraine. Branches in larger cities such as the capital Kyiv, along with Kharkiv, Odesa and Dnipro, typically offer the widest range of services, including currency exchange and account services.

Coverage is uneven between dense urban centres and more rural regions in the west, north and southeast of the country. In smaller towns, access points may be limited to a handful of ATMs or a single branch, and opening hours can be shorter than in metropolitan areas. Carrying a modest amount of cash in hryvnia is often practical when travelling outside the main cities.
